SS Maryland was a steam cargo and cattle carrier of the Atlantic Transport Line, ordered in July 1911 and launched on 4 September 1913 from a Govan yard on the River Clyde, with the hull built by Mackie and Thomson and the ship fitted out at Belfast by Harland and Wolff. She was a two-mast, single-screw steamer built to Board of Trade survey standards and Harland and Wolff practice, with a double bottom, watertight bulkheads up to the upper deck, five steel decks and sixteen five-ton derricks. Delivered on 1 November 1913, she entered service from London and was well suited to carrying horses and mules, which she did in the First World War, including the embarkation of a Surrey Yeomanry squadron with 735 animals at Salonica in January 1919. She was sold for scrap in September 1933 along with her sister ship SS Missouri.
