SS Devonian was a British cargo liner built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for Frederick Leyland and Company, launched on 28 April 1900 as yard number 331 and completed that September. She and her sister Winifredian were about 40 feet longer than the earlier Armenian, Victorian and Cestrian, and had a more powerful engine. She measured 10,405 gross register tons, had a single screw driven by a triple-expansion engine giving 14 knots, and carried 900 cattle and 125 passengers in a one-class layout offering second-class accommodation only, with a small refrigerated space in her holds. Her regular route ran between Liverpool and Boston. In 1913 she rescued 59 survivors from the burning emigrant ship Volturno, and in the First World War she brought thousands of horses from Boston for the British Army. A U-boat sank her in 1917 off the north coast of Ireland.
