MV Aqueity (1945)

Cargo and Merchant Vessels

Aqueity was a small coastal tanker of 890 gross register tons, launched in 1945 by A. and J. Inglis Ltd of Glasgow, yard number 1299, for the British Ministry of War Transport. She was first named Empire Belgrave, following the wartime practice of giving government-owned ships Empire names, and was managed for the ministry by the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company and after the war by Shell Tankers. She was about 193 feet long with a beam of 32 feet and was driven by a four-cylinder, two-stroke diesel engine built by British Polar Engines of Glasgow. In 1947 she was sold to F. T. Everard and Sons of Greenhithe and renamed Aqueity. Her career under that name was brief: on 11 November 1947 she struck a mine off Terschelling in the Netherlands and sank, and the wreck still lies in about 22 metres of water.
