The Welland Canal is a ship canal in Ontario, Canada, forming part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway system. It crosses the Niagara Peninsula between Port Weller on Lake Ontario and Port Colborne on Lake Erie, built because the Niagara River itself is unnavigable due to Niagara Falls. A series of locks lets ships climb and descend the Niagara Escarpment, and the canal has followed four different routes since it first opened.
