The Fiat 309 is a bus model made by the specific division of the Italian company Fiat Veicoli Industriali from 1958. It was launched to replace the Fiat 642RN, which derived from the truck of the same name, and like the 306 it was designed from scratch and not as a body on a truck chassis. Production ended in 1970 when the 308 replaced it. The 309 was available in a 9 metre version for line and grand tourism service. Fiat offered a version with its own body made at the Cansa plant in Cameri that became very common, and the 309 was also sold as a chassis for outside coachbuilders including Orlandi, Dalla Via, Portesi, De Simon, Bianchi, Pietroboni and above all Officine Padane and Menarini. The first ones had mechanics derived from the Fiat 642 truck, and from 1963 those of the Fiat 643, named 309/1. The engine was the Fiat 220/H, an inline six of 9161 cubic centimetres giving 153 horsepower.
