The Mercedes-Benz O 405 GTZ was an articulated trolleybus of Daimler-Benz based on the O 405 G diesel bus, with electrical equipment from Asea Brown Boveri. GTZ stands for articulated trolleybus Zurich. Unlike the O 405 GTD dual-mode bus, whose second drive was a full one, the auxiliary drive of the GTZ produced only 72 kilowatts against 205 kilowatts for the series diesel engine, and it drove the middle axle while the main electric drive sat at the rear on the articulated-bus pusher principle, which gave extra traction on slippery winter roads. Between 1986 and 1993 100 were built, following the five O 305 GT: 79 for the Zurich trolleybus system and 21 for Winterthur. The Winterthur cars had an electric-motor brake and the Zurich cars an eddy-current brake. All have since been retired, the last Zurich high-floor cars in autumn 2015.
