The Mercedes-Benz NEBUS, whose name stands for New Electric Bus, was a city bus with electric drive and hydrogen fuel cells that Daimler-Benz used to generate electricity on board. The name points to its kinship with the NECAR fuel-cell cars of Mercedes-Benz. Daimler-Benz demonstrated the NEBUS in May 1997 to show that fuel-cell drive could be used in urban traffic. Its fuel-cell stacks delivered up to 250 kilowatts. Its successor, the Mercedes-Benz Citaro BZ, later demonstrated the everyday suitability of fuel cells in city bus service in ten European cities in the CUTE and ECTOS projects. The NEBUS is therefore the first step in the line of Mercedes-Benz fuel-cell buses, a demonstrator rather than a production vehicle.
