The Mercedes-Benz OH 1621 L bus chassis was a product of the Latin American subsidiaries of the German firm for urban and suburban passenger transport. It had a semi-low entrance, the floor of the front half being 20 cm lower than in traditional buses, and was created to meet the universal-access rules that began in Buenos Aires in the late 1990s and as an answer to the semi-low version of the El Detalle OA101. At the end of 1996 El Detalle launched that version and months later Mercedes-Benz replied with the OH 1621 L, which had the same engine as the OHL 1420. Mercedes later added the super-low OH 1521 Lsb and OH 1721 Lsb, and production of the OH 1621 chassis was discontinued in 2003, the segment then being covered by imported O 500 U chassis.
