Bedford SB

Buses and Road Mass Transit Vehicles

The Bedford SB was a front-engined bus chassis manufactured by Bedford in England. It was launched at the 1950 Commercial Motor Show as the replacement for the Bedford OB and was the first Bedford vehicle with a forward control design, with the driver's seat at the right of the engine and the front axle underneath. It had a four-speed synchromesh gearbox, with five-speed units offered later, and was first available only with a Bedford petrol engine, with a Perkins R6, a Bedford diesel and Leyland O.350 and O.370 diesels added later. Bodywork came from builders such as Duple, Marshall, Plaxton, Harrington and Willowbrook. By 1980 over 54,000 had been built, 38,000 for overseas operators, and production ceased in December 1986 after 36 years.
