Road, Bridge and Cycling Engineers

Joseph Baermann Strauss, born in 1870 and died in 1938, was an American structural engineer who revolutionized the design of bascule bridges. He served as the chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, the suspension bridge across the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This entry records him as a bridge engineer so that the great spans he led can be linked to the person who directed their engineering, alongside the other engineers who contributed to their design.
