The unicycle is a human-powered vehicle with a single wheel, ridden by balancing directly over the axle rather than relying on a second wheel or outriggers for stability. Developed in the nineteenth century as an offshoot of the high-wheel penny-farthing bicycle once its rear wheel proved unnecessary for balance, it has since found use in circus and street performance, competitive unicycle sport, and increasingly in off-road and long-distance riding on specialized larger-wheeled models.
