The Pedersen bicycle is a distinctive bicycle design patented by the Danish engineer Mikael Pedersen in 1893, built around a triangulated frame made from many thin steel tubes rather than the small number of thick tubes used in a conventional bicycle frame. Its most recognizable feature is a hammock-style saddle, a fabric sling suspended within the frame rather than a rigid perch, which was prized for its riding comfort. Though never a mass-market success compared with conventional bicycle designs, the Pedersen has continued to be produced in small numbers by specialist manufacturers and retains a following among enthusiasts of unusual bicycle engineering.
