The Moulton Bicycle is a small-wheeled bicycle design created by British engineer Alex Moulton and introduced in 1962, built around a distinctive space-frame construction with rubber suspension at both the front and rear wheels rather than the large-diameter wheels and rigid frame of a conventional bicycle. Moulton, previously known for his work on rubber suspension for the Mini car, designed the bicycle to show that small wheels combined with proper suspension could match or exceed the ride quality and speed of a standard machine while allowing a lighter, more compact frame. Though it never displaced the conventional diamond-frame bicycle as the mainstream standard, it proved commercially successful and established small-wheeled, separable and folding bicycle designs as a durable niche within cycling, with later Moulton models continuing to be built by hand in small numbers.
