A cyclocross bicycle is a bicycle built for cyclocross racing, a discipline combining short, intense laps of a mixed off-road and paved course with sections a rider must dismount to carry the bicycle over, such as steep banks, stairs or barriers. Built with a frame resembling a road bicycle's drop-handlebar layout but with wider tire clearance, knobbier tires and more robust brakes suited to mud and loose surfaces, and a bottom bracket raised somewhat higher than a road bicycle's for better obstacle clearance, it occupies a design niche between a pure road bicycle and a mountain bike. Originally developed in Europe as an off-season training discipline for road racers, cyclocross racing and its purpose-built bicycles grew into a significant competitive discipline of their own.
