Balance Bike

A balance bike is a small childrens bicycle built with no pedals or drivetrain, propelled instead by the rider pushing off the ground with their feet while seated, which lets a young child learn steering and balance before learning to pedal. The concept revives the basic principle of the earliest nineteenth-century two-wheeled velocipedes, which likewise had no pedals, though the balance bike re-emerged as a distinct modern children product in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It is now widely used as a preliminary step before a child moves on to a pedal-equipped bicycle, often replacing training wheels in that role.
