Jacob Ellehammer

Aviation Pioneers and Aviators

Jacob Christian Hansen-Ellehammer (1871 to 1946) was a Danish inventor and aviation pioneer. He obtained a total of 59 Danish patents and worked on many different things, including amusement machines, Tivoli boats, egg openers, cleavers for pig slaughterhouses, engines in countless shades, motorcycles, cars, alternative energy and fire-fighting equipment. He was also among the first in Europe to fly an airplane, which is why he belongs here among the pioneers of air travel. The source lead does not describe his aircraft or flights in detail, so this entry stays to what the lead states.

FAQs

Was Jacob Ellehammer the first person to fly in Europe?

For a long time his 1906 flight was regarded as the first in Europe, but credit is today generally given to Santos-Dumont for a free flight in France a few months later.

Not by today's general judgement. His flight on the island of Lindholm in 1906 was for a long time regarded as the first in Europe. The Ellehammer Foundation's history page says that it is today generally recognised that the credit goes to Alberto Santos-Dumont for a free flight in France a few months later.
