George de Bothezat was a Romanian-Russian American engineer, businessman and pioneer of helicopter flight. Born in Saint Petersburg in 1882, he fled Russia during the 1917 revolution and settled in the United States. In 1921 the US Army Air Service contracted him to build a helicopter prototype, and his quadrotor design, nicknamed the flying octopus, achieved successful though limited flights in 1922. He later founded an industrial fan company and returned to helicopter development in 1938 before his death in Boston in 1940.
