Max Friz (1883-1966) was a German mechanical engineer, born in Urach and died in Tegernsee, who was instrumental in the founding of BMW, when Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917. He specialized in engine design. After the First World War ended aircraft work, he turned to motorcycles and engineered the R32, whose boxer-style engine debuted at the Paris Auto Show in 1923 and caused a sensation among engineers and consumers. It set the pattern for later boxer-powered BMW motorcycles.
