Volkswagen D24 engine

Automotive Engines

The Volkswagen D24 is a 2.4 litre naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder diesel engine that Volkswagen Group manufactured from 1978 to 1995. Turbocharged versions followed as the D24T, and a turbocharged and intercooled version as the D24TIC. All variants share a displacement of 2,383 cubic centimetres, a grey cast iron block with seven main bearings, an aluminium alloy single overhead camshaft head driven by a timing belt, indirect injection through a Bosch distributor-type pump, and a compression ratio of 23 to 1. The first variant produced 55 kilowatts. Volkswagen fitted it to the LT range of commercial vehicles, and it was also used in the Volvo 240, 740 and 940 and, as the D24T, in the Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pinzgauer. Owners reported mixed reliability, with head gasket and overheating problems on poorly maintained engines.
