The Porsche V8 engines are the family of eight-cylinder engines that Porsche has built since its first V8 appeared in the front-engined 928 in 1977. The line begins with the Type M28, an all-alloy design with a linerless block, grows through multi-valve versions up to 5.4 litres, and continues with the Type M48 of the Cayenne and Panamera, the flat-plane crankshaft MR6 of the RS Spyder and the M18 of the 918 Spyder hybrid. Porsche also made racing V8s: the 9M0 turbocharged Indycar unit, the Audi-shared EA825 twin-turbo and the 9RD of the 963 Le Mans hybrid. It shows how a company known for air-cooled flat engines moved into water-cooled V8 power for grand tourers, sedans, sport utility vehicles and race cars.
