The Porsche flat-six is a line of mechanically similar six-cylinder boxer engines that Porsche has produced for more than sixty consecutive years, from its introduction in the 1963 rear-engine Porsche 911 and, in 1966, as a mid-mounted racing engine in the Porsche 906 Carrera 6, both of two litres. The engines stayed air-cooled with additional oil cooling until the Porsche 996 introduced simpler water-cooled units, although some turbocharged endurance racing engines of the 1980s were partly or fully water-cooled for cars such as the Porsche 956 and 962. The design is an evolution of the air-cooled flat-four boxer engines of Ferdinand Porsche that powered the original Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 356. The 911 has used flat-six engines exclusively since 1963, and the Porsche 914/6, 959, Boxster and Cayman used them too; the 4.0 litre engine of the 2011 911 GT3 RS 4.0 produced 500 PS.
