The Nissan MA is a straight-four single overhead camshaft engine of 0.9, 1.0 or 1.2 L that Nissan introduced in 1982, intended primarily for the K10 series Micra, sold in Japan as the March. It shares design elements with the older E engine, such as the eight-valve hemispherical cylinder head, but uses an aluminium cylinder block. Unusually, the specified ignition timing for the MA10 running on 90 RON gasoline was 2 degrees after top dead centre, reflecting the high flame speed in its compact combustion chambers. The larger MA12S of 1,235 cc has an enlarged bore and stroke and was used in the Micra K10.
