The Nissan CA is a series of 1.6 to 2.0 L inline-four piston engines, designed for a wide range of smaller Nissan vehicles to replace the Z engine and some smaller four-cylinder L series engines. The letters stand for Clean Air, after Nissan's NAPS-X emission reducing technology. It has a cast iron block, an aluminium head and a timing belt, which was cheaper to build than the chain drive of the Z and L engines. Early versions were single overhead camshaft with eight valves, and later versions were double overhead camshaft with 16 valves. A CA16 weighs 115 kg, 23 percent less than the earlier Z16. Nissan also developed it into the CD diesel, and the aluminium, chain driven SR series replaced the 1.8 and 2.0 L versions.
