Mitsubishi ME21/24 engine

Automotive Engines

The ME21/24 was a two-stroke twin-cylinder engine of 359 cc that Shin Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries, one of the three divisions of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries until their consolidation in 1964, introduced to replace the 309 cc single-cylinder overhead valve ME20. The name follows the postwar factory code system: M for the Mizushima plant, E for engine and 21 for the 21st engine developed there. The ME21 was first used in the Mitsubishi 360 light commercial of April 1961 and then in the Minica, producing only 17 PS. The ME24 followed in November 1964 with an Auto Mix system that removed the need for pre-mixed gasoline and oil and gained one horsepower, a reed valve ME24D arrived in May 1967, and later versions served in the base second generation Minica and Minicab until a detuned water-cooled 2G10 replaced them in late 1972. The Hope Motor Company also used a 21 PS ME24 in its ON360 off-roader.
