The Mitsubishi 4A9 is an all-aluminium inline four-cylinder engine family with four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts and MIVEC continuously variable timing on the intake side. It began as a joint project of Mitsubishi Motors and DaimlerChrysler, with MDC Power in Germany handling production, and first appeared in the 2004 Mitsubishi Colt supermini. It is Mitsubishi's first four-cylinder family to use a high-pressure die-cast aluminium block. Versions include the 1.3 litre 4A90, the 1.5 litre 4A91 and the 1.6 litre 4A92, and the engine is now also built in Japan, China and Indonesia. Besides Mitsubishi's own Colt, Lancer, Xpander and Xforce it has powered the Smart Forfour and many Chinese-market cars.
