Honda B16B engine

The Honda B16B is a water-cooled inline four-cylinder petrol engine with double overhead camshafts and sixteen valves, developed and built by Honda for one car, the first-generation Civic Type R (EK9), and designed specifically for it. It carries Honda's VTEC variable valve timing system and was derived from the B16A engine, with parts made specially for it and the engine block of the B18C. Honda set a target of at least 185 horsepower after racing teams asked for more power, and the engine displaces 1,595 cc with a bore and stroke of 81.0 by 77.4 millimetres, a compression ratio of 10.8 to 1 against 10.4 to 1 for the B16A, and 185 PS at 8,200 rpm with 16.3 kgf m of torque at 7,500 rpm. That output, about 116 PS per litre, was among the highest in the world for a mass-produced naturally aspirated engine of its time. Forged connecting rods, moly-coated pistons and a fully balanced eight-weight crankshaft supported the high revs.
