Automotive Engines

The Honda A series is a family of inline-four cylinder engines that powered the Honda Accord and Prelude through the 1980s. It was introduced in 1982 with the second-generation Prelude and came in three displacements of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litres, with a cast iron block and an aluminium SOHC head carrying three valves per cylinder, twelve in all. Buyers could have it carbureted or fuel-injected. The A series succeeded the earlier EZ, ES, BS and ET engines. The 1.6 litre version has a shorter piston stroke than the 1.8 litre, and the 2.0 litre is reached by widening the bore. From the 1988 model year the North American A20A3 and A20A4 gained a dual-stage runner intake manifold and a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold.
