The Porsche V4 engine, type 9R9, is a two litre, four-stroke, single-turbocharged V4 racing engine that Porsche designed and built for its 919 Hybrid Le Mans prototype between 2014 and 2017. Its cylinders sit at 90 degrees, it revs to 9,000 rpm, and it uses direct fuel injection and one Garrett turbocharger with dual overhead camshafts. It produced about 500 horsepower and was a load-bearing part of the chassis, so compact that the transmission casing hung from the rear suspension and ran nearly a third of the length of the car. The engine breathed through a carbon fibre and gold-wrapped airbox in the middle of the unit, fed by louvres along the flank and a curved roll hoop intake.
