The Porsche 547 engine, often called the Fuhrmann engine after its designer Ernst Fuhrmann, is an air-cooled, naturally aspirated flat-four boxer engine that Porsche introduced in 1954 to upgrade the mid-engined 550 sports car. It was based on the Volkswagen design but carried four overhead camshafts, and it first gave 110 horsepower from 1,500 cc. The engine went on to power the 550A, the 718 and the Formula Two and Formula One cars derived from it, including the 547/3 with Kugelfischer fuel injection used in the 1961 Formula One season. The last version gave about 180 horsepower from 2,000 cc in the 904 Carrera GTS, and the flat-six of the 911 then made the four obsolete.
