The Honda HF386E is a 3.0 litre V8 racing engine that Honda introduced in 2006 for the Formula Nippon series. The Mugen MF308, which had been used since the days of the All Japan F3000 championship, was withdrawn from the series after 2005 because parts could no longer be supplied, so a new engine was needed. Honda adapted the V8 it had developed jointly with Ilmor for the IndyCar Series, with M-TEC joining the work, and the result stayed in use until 2008. It is a water-cooled 90 degree V8 with DOHC and 32 valves, displacing 3,000 cc, reaching 10,300 rpm and more than 550 PS, with a Pectel SQ8 management system and a weight of 127 kilograms. Until then the series had used a single make of engine, and Toyota joined as a second supplier with the RV8J.
