Ferrari has manufactured three naturally aspirated V8 engines for Formula One racing. The first was the Tipo DS50, introduced in 1956 in a 2.5 litre configuration. The second was the Tipo 205/B, introduced in 1964 as a 1.5 litre engine and designed by Franco Rocchi and Angelo Bellei. After a hiatus of 42 years the FIA imposed a 2.4 litre V8 formula on every Formula One team in 2006, and Ferrari answered with the Tipo 056, designed by Gilles Simon. The entry therefore covers a family of separate designs spread across half a century, tied together by the V8 layout and by the regulations of each era.
