Northstar engine series

Automotive Engines

The Northstar is a family of high-performance 90 degree V engines that General Motors produced from 1993 to 2011. Regarded as GM's most technically complex engine, the original design was a double overhead cam, four-valve-per-cylinder, aluminium block and head V8 developed by Oldsmobile research and development, though it is most associated with Cadillac. It displaced 4.6 litres in basic form, and longitudinal and 4.4 litre supercharged versions followed. Variants were used by Oldsmobile as the Aurora L47 V8 and the Shortstar LX5 V6, and in several 2000s Pontiacs and Buicks. GM began the design at Oldsmobile in 1984. Production ended in 2011, with the Cadillac DTS, Buick Lucerne and Cadillac STS the last cars to receive it, and the GM LS pushrod V8 replaced it.
