The General Motors LS-based small-block engines are a family of V8 engines and offshoot V6 engines that General Motors designed and manufactured, introduced in 1997 as a continuation of the first- and second-generation Chevrolet small-block, of which over 100 million have been produced. The LS name comes from the Regular Production Option code LS1, assigned to the first Gen III engine, and the family spans the third, fourth and fifth generations. The LS1 first appeared in the Chevrolet Corvette (C5), and LS or LT engines have powered every Corvette generation since, except the Z06 and ZR1 of the eighth generation, which use the unrelated Chevrolet Gemini engine. Other users include the Chevrolet Camaro, the Pontiac Firebird, the Holden Commodore, the Chevrolet Silverado and the Cadillac Escalade.
