The Chevrolet big-block engine is a series of large-displacement, naturally aspirated, 90 degree, overhead valve, gasoline-powered V8 engines that the Chevrolet Division of General Motors developed and has produced from the late 1950s to the present. Chevrolet introduced its small-block V8 in 1955 but needed something larger for its medium-duty trucks and the heavier cars then on the drawing board, and the big-block debuted in 1958 at 348 cubic inches (5.7 litres). It was built in standard displacements up to 496 cubic inches (8.1 litres), with aftermarket crate engines from Chevrolet exceeding 500 cubic inches. The first version was the W-series, produced from 1958 to 1965 in 348, 409 and 427 cubic inch sizes. The engines powered many General Motors products beyond Chevrolets, and appeared in boats, motorhomes and armored vehicles.
