The Mitsubishi 4J1 engine is a range of all-alloy straight-four petrol engines from Mitsubishi Motors, in production from 2011. Its declared main goal was to reduce the on-road carbon dioxide emissions of new vehicles. Compared with the 4B1 series it follows, the valvetrain changed from double to single overhead camshaft and variable valve lift was added through a next-generation MIVEC system that continuously regulates intake valve lift, opening duration and timing. The engine is usually paired with a stop-start system and exhaust gas recirculation. The family has three members, the 1.8 L 4J10, the 4J11 and the 4J12, which Mitsubishi presented as more economical counterparts of the 4B10, 4B11 and 4B12. It appears mostly in the Lancer X, the ASX and the Outlander on several markets across Japan, Europe and Latin America.
