Mitsubishi 3B2 engine

Automotive Engines

The Mitsubishi 3B2 engine is a family of all-alloy three-cylinder petrol engines developed by Mitsubishi Motors and first produced in December 2005 at the company's Mizushima powertrain facility in Kurashiki, Okayama, for the 2006 Mitsubishi i kei car. Every engine in the family has an aluminum cylinder block and head, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and MIVEC continuous variable valve timing. The 3B20 was designed with a rear-midship layout in mind without being limited to it. A simplified block structure, a timing chain and modular oil and water pumps, engine mounts and fuel system helped cut the engine's weight by 20 percent compared with the iron-block 3G83 it replaced, with gains in torque, fuel economy and emissions. The 0.7 L (659 cc) version served in the Mitsubishi i, the eK and the Nissan Dayz, while a 1.0 L (999 cc) version, too large for the Japanese kei class, powered the second-generation Smart Fortwo, where it carried the Mercedes-Benz designation M132.
