The Renault Voiturette is the first automobile produced by Renault, built by Louis Renault in 1898 using a De Dion-Bouton engine fitted to a chassis of his own design with a direct drive transmission he had devised, an arrangement more efficient than the belt drives common on other light cars of the time. Its success after a public demonstration led Louis Renault and his brothers to found the company that became Renault, and it remained in production in various forms until 1903.

He built his first car in 1898, hiring a pair of workmen to modify a used 3/4 hp (560 W) De Dion-Bouton cycle which featured a revolutionary universally jointed driveshaft and a three-speed gearbox with reverse, with the third gear in direct drive (which he patented a year later).
