The Fiat 28-40 HP, also known as the Fiat Targa Florio Corsa, was a Grand Prix racing car that Fiat built in 1906 and 1907. It was developed from the Fiat 24-32 HP of 1903, with a lightened frame, a more powerful engine and a water-cooled brake system added to deal with overheating. Five cars were built for racing and won several races: in 1906 Emile Mathis took the Golden Cup in the Herkomer rally and Vincenzo Lancia the Gold Cup in Milan, and in 1908 Emile Salmson won the 322 mile winter race between Gothenburg and Stockholm in 23 hours 42 minutes, more than four hours ahead of the runner-up. Fiat then widened the line to passenger cars as sedans and coupes and, because the chassis was sturdy and used proven technology, chose it as the base for its first light trucks and buses, one autobus version carrying 14 passengers. In total 557 vehicles were built in various configurations.
