Fiat 130 HP

Automobiles

The Fiat 130 HP was a Grand Prix racing car that Fiat made in 1907 to a design by Giovanni Enrico. It was built only for racing, to suit new Grand Prix rules that year which removed the weight and displacement limits and capped fuel use at 30 litres per 100 km, and it gave Fiat the high-powered engine it had lacked against the French, its earlier, less powerful racers having included the 28/40 HP Corsa and the 60 HP. John Henry managed the project with Enrico and the technical directors Guido Fornaca and Carlo Cavalli. The front-mounted four-cylinder engine displaced 16,286 cc and brought overhead valves, hemispherical combustion chambers, centrally placed spark plugs and a bore wider than the stroke, with a Simms-Bosch magneto, a single carburettor and chain final drive; the car weighed more than 1,000 kg yet still ran on wooden wheels. Felice Nazzaro won the Targa Florio, the Kaiserpreis and, in the end, the 1907 French Grand Prix at Dieppe in it.
