The first-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was the van launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the T1 Transporter, which dated from 1977. Compared with the T1 it cut aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm further forward to give more cabin space, it had four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking, and its diesel engine, at 90 kW (120 hp), was the most powerful in its class. It was voted International Van of the Year for 1995 and was restyled in 2000 and 2002, when electronic stability control became standard. In North America it arrived for the 2002 model year as a Freightliner and as a Dodge from 2003, built from kits assembled by Freightliner in South Carolina. Production of the generation gave way to the second-generation Sprinter in 2006.
