The Maruti Suzuki Esteem was a three-box sedan that Maruti sold in India from November 1994 until production ended in December 2008. It began as an upgraded Maruti 1000 with a more powerful 1.3-litre engine; the first cars used a 65 PS carburetted unit, replaced in 2000 by an 85 PS fuel-injected 16-valve engine, and a 1527 cc Peugeot-sourced diesel was offered until Maruti phased it out around 2005. Trim levels grew from LX and VX to LXi and VXi, an AX automatic arrived in June 1996, and the car was facelifted in 1998 and 2004. Its good power-to-weight ratio made the Esteem popular in Indian rallying. The Suzuki Swift DZire replaced it, and the Esteem sat in the same Suzuki Cultus based sedan family as the Maruti 1000.
