Maruti 1000

Automobiles

The Maruti 1000 was a sedan that Maruti Udyog built in India from October 1990 until 2000. It was a rebadged Suzuki Cultus, also sold as the Swift, and was shown by Maruti from 1989 as the country's first contemporary three-box sedan. Its 970 cc engine produced just 46 hp, which proved underpowered for a car weighing 825 kg, and a better equipped 1.0 GLX version was offered to buyers who could pay in foreign exchange. Demand far outran supply, so a computerised lottery decided who could buy one, and at Rs 381,000 it was a luxury purchase out of reach for more than 99.5 percent of Indians. The upgraded Esteem arrived in November 1994 and the 1000 stayed below it until March 2000, when low sales ended its production.
