The Holden Commodore is an automobile built by the Australian manufacturer Holden from 1978 until Holden's Australian manufacturing ended in 2017, serving for most of that period as Holden's flagship large family sedan and one of the best-selling cars in Australian automotive history. Built initially on a shortened version of a European General Motors platform adapted for Australian conditions and later developed into a distinctively Australian-engineered vehicle, including locally developed six-cylinder and V8 engine options, the Commodore became closely associated with Australian motorsport through its long rivalry with the Ford Falcon in Australian touring car racing, particularly the Bathurst 1000 endurance race. Its retirement as a locally built model in 2017 marked the end of an era for Australian-designed and Australian-built automobiles.
