Berlin (carriage)

Animal- and Human-Powered Overland Vehicles

A Berlin, or Berline, is an enclosed four-wheeled carriage type whose name originally referred to a style of undercarriage using two perch rails with the body suspended on leather thoroughbraces, giving a smoother ride than earlier coach designs. The Berlin undercarriage could be paired with different body styles, but the term Berlin came to describe a particular coach body shape that was widely copied by coachbuilders across Europe.
