Tonga (Vehicle)

Animal- and Human-Powered Overland Vehicles

A tonga is a light, two wheeled carriage drawn by a single horse, long used across the Indian subcontinent for short distance passenger transport in towns and cities. Seating passengers back to back over the axle with the driver at the front, it served for generations as an inexpensive and widely available form of local transport before being displaced in most cities by motorized auto rickshaws and taxis, though it still operates in some smaller towns and tourist areas.
