Beijing Capital International Airport is the principal international gateway to China's capital and for many years was mainland China's busiest airport, growing rapidly alongside the country's economic expansion. It has served as the primary hub for Air China and other major domestic carriers, and its terminal buildings, including a large terminal completed for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, were built specifically to accommodate a surge in both business and leisure air travel. Rising demand eventually led Beijing to build a second major airport, Beijing Daxing, to share the load.
