The Avro 691 Lancastrian was a British and Canadian passenger and mail transport aircraft of the 1940s and 1950s developed from the Lancaster heavy bomber. It was essentially a Lancaster without armour or armament, with streamlined fairings in place of the gun turrets and a new nose section. In 1943 Canada's Victory Aircraft converted a Lancaster X for Trans-Canada Airlines, and eight more conversions followed for the Montreal to Prestwick route. In 1945 deliveries began of 30 British-built Lancastrians for BOAC, and on a demonstration flight on 23 April 1945 G-AGLF flew 13,500 miles from England to Auckland in three days and fourteen hours. The type was fast, long-ranged and able to carry a heavy load, but its cabin space was very limited. Variants also served British South American Airways and the RAF.
