The Airbus A330 is a wide-body jet airliner built by the European manufacturer Airbus, introduced into service in 1994 as a twin-engine counterpart to the four-engine Airbus A340, developed together on a shared airframe so airlines could choose the number of engines that best suited a given route's range requirements. Built for medium- to long-range service and widely adopted by airlines around the world for both passenger and later dedicated freighter use, the A330 became one of the best-selling wide-body airliners of its era, and an extended-range version later kept it in strong demand even as the four-engine A340 fell out of favor with airlines seeking twin-engine fuel efficiency. A re-engined successor, the A330neo, extended the family into the 2020s.
