Space Shuttle Challenger

Spacecraft and Launch Vehicles

Space Shuttle Challenger, designated OV-099, was the second Space Shuttle orbiter to fly into space after Columbia. Rockwell International manufactured it and NASA operated it. It began as a structural test article, STA-099, ordered from North American Rockwell in 1972, and was converted for flight when upgrading Enterprise proved more costly. It first flew in April 1983, carried out ten missions and was the most flown orbiter in its three years of service, launching satellites and carrying several first-flight astronauts. On its tenth flight in January 1986 it exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all seven crew of STS-51-L.
