The Mitsubishi F-2 is a single-engine multirole fighter derived from the General Dynamics F-16 and built for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin, with a 60 to 40 manufacturing split between Japan and the United States. Its design is based on the F-16C Block 40. It replaced the Mitsubishi F-1 and carried the first active electronically scanned array radar fitted to a combat aircraft. The first aircraft flew on 7 October 1995, production started in 1996 and the first aircraft entered service in 2000. Orders were cut to 98 airframes including four prototypes, and the last production aircraft was delivered on 27 September 2011, when Mitsubishi confirmed production would end.
